What Does Meaningful Interaction Look Like?

That’s the question driving our Somabotics soft robotics team as they explore how technology can create new forms of connection.

On Wednesday 12th November 2025, the team met with Makers of Imaginary Worlds and playground artists Playground Kent to discuss an exciting collaboration: designing an immersive installation for babies that introduces them to the world of soft robotics.

The conversation focused on actuation techniques and design prompts that could encourage babies to interact with the installation in playful, intuitive ways. To inform this work, the team observed how MOIW and the playground artists engage babies during a workshop featuring Garden Themed Installations for Pre-walkers at the Beaney Canterbury from 27 April – 4 July 2026.

These insights are shaping the next stage of the project, which will involve Caroline Yan, Maria Elena Giannaccini and Helen Payne—pushing the boundaries of how soft robotics can support early sensory experiences and creative exploration.
