Call for Filmmakers & Film Artists to join AI Lens Embodied Storytelling Workshops

25th November & 12th December

Call for Filmmakers & Film Artists: Embodied Storytelling with AI Lens

We are inviting filmmakers, film artists, and moving image practitioners to take part in a new research project exploring AI Lens — a camera system that transforms filmed reality through live generative AI.

AI Lens is not about replacing human creativity. Instead, it places filmmakers and performers at the centre of the process, working through the body, the camera, and the story. By replacing the live monitor with AI-generated imagery, the camera creates an immediate and embodied dialogue between human intention and machine imagination.

We will be holding two workshops for interested parties to experiment hands-on with a filmmaking tool that opens up new possibilities for cinematography, storytelling, and collaboration with AI.

As part of this process, two filmmakers will be commissioned to develop and shoot new works with AI Lens in early 2026, with production costs supported by the project. These films will be presented at screenings and festivals internationally as part of our wider programme.

Why take part?

  • Explore how AI can expand, rather than replace, the art of filmmaking.
  • Engage in an embodied creative process, where directing, performance, and technology meet.
  • Experiment with new aesthetics and narrative strategies that emerge from working live with AI.
  • Contribute to a pioneering research project on the future of filmmaking.

Who we’re looking for

  • Filmmakers, film artists, or moving image practitioners interested in pushing the boundaries of storytelling.
  • No prior experience with AI required — only openness to experimentation and collaboration.
  • We particularly encourage applications from underrepresented voices in filmmaking.

What’s involved

  • Take part in an initial hands-on workshop where you’ll:
  • Experiment directly with the AI Lens camera.
  • Explore the interplay between human performance, technology, and story.
  • Collaborate with other filmmakers and researchers.
  • Help shape the creative and technical development of the tool.
  • Following workshops, participants will be eligible to apply for one of the funded commissions.

To apply to attend one of our workshops, please complete this form.

Workshops will take place at the Virtual and Immersive Production Studio which is based in Studio 11 at the University of Nottingham’s King’s Meadow campus, King’s Meadow Campus, Lenton Lane, Nottingham NG7 2NR UK
