Exploring Creative AI for Live Interactive Performances at AAAI 2026

Members of the Somabotics Fellowship will lead a workshop on Creative AI for Live Interactive Performances, at the 40th Annual Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) Conference in Singapore on the 26th of January 2026.
The workshop will bring together researchers interested in interactive creative AI to develop artificial intelligence systems that collaborate with humans across the performing arts—including music, visual arts, dance, and drama. A central question we aim to address is: How can we design AI systems that meaningfully participate in real-time creative workflows to enhance human performance?
Creative AI for live interactive performances differs from conventional AI applications because these systems must handle the subjective, contextual, and evolving nature of creative work while remaining responsive to human intent.
Our workshop will address these challenges through keynote presentations, roundtable discussions, and live interactive demos, alongside a video show-and-tell showcasing cutting-edge creative AI systems.
Along with Professor Steve Benford, Jose L Contreras-Vidal, PhD, Founder and Director of the IUCRC BRAIN CENTER at the University of Houston will deliver a keynote at the workshop. Jose is renowned for his pioneering research in brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and their integration with generative AI to create immersive visual experiences.
